Dynamic pressure variations in the lower crust caused by localized fluid-induced weakening

چکیده

Abstract Metamorphism of dry, lower crust within orogens is often localized in shear zones composed mechanically weaker rocks 1–4 . Several field-based studies suggest zone development preceded by brittle faults which provide the fluid pathways required for metamorphism and weakening 4–12 However, a unifying model couples long-term geological deformation to migration metamorphic reactions does not exist. Here, we present visco-elasto-plastic where most pertinent features observed transformed emerge from basic mechanical principles during coherent rock volume with associated introduction. These include strikingly dynamic heterogeneous pressure distribution reacting deforming volumes. Lower crustal variations may reach 1 GPa at same depth. This will have first order effects on pattern crust, explain apparent discrepancies between relevant tectonic settings petrologically-inferred burial depths.

Nucleation of slip-weakening rupture instability in landslides by localized increase of pore pressure

We model landslide initiation as slip surface growth driven by local elevated pore pressure, with particular reference to submarine slides. Assuming an elastic medium and friction that weakens with slip, solutions exist in which the slip surface may dynamically grow, without further pore pressure increases, at a rate of the order of the sediment shear wave speed, a situation comparable to earth...

Dynamic Fault Weakening and Strengthening by Gouge Compaction and Dilatancy in a Fluid-Saturated Fault Zone

Triaxial experiments show that samples of fault gouge deform distinctly differently than those from the adjacent fault damage zone (e.g., Chester and Logan, 1986). Rock samples in the damage zone follow a characteristic elastic-brittle behavior, whereas fault gouge readily compacts and deforms in a more ductile manner. In order to explain the apparent weakness of large plate bounding faults suc...

Three-dimensional variations in the lower limb caused by the windlass mechanism

Background The windlass mechanism was described as the effect caused by the extension of the first metatarsalphalangeal joint (1st MTPJ). Quantify the degrees of movement produced in the leg by means of the Bioval® sensor system, after performing two measurements in the 1st MTPJ, 45° extension and maximum extension. Methods Tests-post-test study with just one intervention group, performed in ...

Chemical and Thermal Constraints on Focussed Fluid Flow in the Lower Oceanic Crust

The mechanism of heat extraction from the lower oceanic crust near the ridge axis is poorly constrained despite its importance for understanding both the process of accretion of the plutonic complex and the mass fluxes associated with ridge hydrothermal systems. We have investigated the role of zones of focussed fluid flow in the plutonic complex of the Oman ophiolite in the near-axis cooling o...

Changes in the structure of neuromuscular junctions caused by variations in osmotic pressure

Neuromuscular junctions of the frog, Rana pipiens, were examined for structural modifications produced by exposure to increased and reduced osmotic pressure (pi). Preparations exposed to increased pi for varying lengths of time were fixed with either OSO4-Veronal with and without calcium, glutaraldehyde-phosphate, or glutaraldehyde-formaldehyde-phosphate as primary fixatives. The greatest diffe...
